Small and medium business (SMB) owners often need to deal with a lot of information, some of which they would want to keep private and secure. In contrast, others should be easily accessible and available. Nowadays, many options in the market would allow SMB owners to do both. One such option is to store their information in the cloud.
So what exactly is cloud computing? It is a service that not only allows users to back up their data to other servers over the Internet but also allows them to get access to certain web-based applications such as requests for word processing, spreadsheet, invoicing, etc. Here are some reasons why SMB should move to the cloud.
Computer hardware and software become obsolete quickly these days. For SMB, having to upgrade and maintain the hardware and software could significantly add to their operating costs. For SMB owners who do not have the technical skills or time to do the maintenance themselves, they will have to hire someone to do it.
By moving their SMB to the cloud, SMB owners will not have to worry about upgrading their hardware or software continuously, as both will be located remotely. The maintenance will be taken care of by the dedicated technical teams of the cloud service providers.
For SMB that keep their important files and data on the site, they could lose all valuable information about their business when disaster strikes. For example, when there is a fire in the office, the last thing SMB owners want to worry about is grabbing the computer hard drive that holds all the necessary files of their business.
With cloud computing, data are backed up to the cloud automatically. The database could be located 1,000 miles from the firm. Even if there is a fire or a flood at the physical location of the SMB, the data will remain intact. Restoring the data usually involves just a few clicks of buttons. For SMB that run their business with cloud-based apps, they won’t even have to worry about re-installing any software if their computers crash and die because they are hosted on another server over the Internet. All these SMB needs is another computer with Internet access, and they are good to go.
Moreover, cloud service providers usually have a backup system. This means that they back up their data on another server. If their main servers go down, the service providers will switch over to the backup systems immediately. This redundancy allows SMB to continue their business with minimal interruption.
Cloud computing allows users to access their apps and data from anywhere. Unlike traditional desktop software that can only be run on the computer on which the software is installed, most cloud-based apps require nothing but a browser and a stable Internet connection to run. SMB owners don’t have to worry about forgetting an important file in the office when they need to meet a client. With the increasing popularity of telecommuting, SMB owners and their employees can work remotely if their business is on the cloud.
